Nate Jordan is Golf Course Superintendent of the newly-renovated University of Illinois Atkins Golf Club (formerly Stone Creek Golf Club) in Urbana.
Nate has worked at some really interesting golf courses around the country, including a stint at Shinnecock Hills as they were preparing to host the U.S. Open in 2018. Prior to taking the position at Atkins Golf Club, Nate was here in the Tri-County HOI area as Superintendent of the Mt. Hawley Country Club golf course.
As Superintendent of Atkins Golf Club, Nate was intimately involved with all phases of the renovation, and in this interview, relates details regarding major work done to the course to make it challenging and fun for both the public and the U of I Men’s and Women’s golf teams.
We also take a deep dive into the renovation/construction of bunkers and greens, two of the most complex features of any golf course.
Finally, we discuss the work that all courses must do to prepare for the return of golfers each spring, and the challenges presented by this year’s weather so far.
